The battery’s main job on a generator is to supply enough current to turn the starter motor (crank the engine) and support any auxiliary loads (control panels, sensors, etc.) until the generator is running and the alternator takes over.
Use short, thick battery cables to minimise voltage drop; high internal resistance or long/undersized cables reduce effective voltage at the starter and can cause failed starts. Make sure that the battery charger or float charger is properly sized and functioning, so that the battery remains fully charged when the generator is idle. Undercharging leads to sulfation; overcharging damages battery life.
